Pokeweed

Pokeweed is a native plant of the eastern USA, these berries photographed at Bass River Recreation Area in Michigan. The plant and berries are toxic and become more so as the plant matures. The berries are useful, however, for making ink and as a dye, though the plant is seldom used either way today.

Lawyer's Wigs

These mushrooms, examples of the widespread species, Coprinus comatus, are known as Lawyer's Wigs, Shaggy Ink Caps or more commonly as Shaggy Mane mushrooms. They are edible when young and are even grown commercially in some places, but as they age they begin to "melt" as is evident from some of the individual plants in this photo. The photo was taken at the Devonian Botanic Gardens in Devon, Alberta, in the area of Edmonton.
