We probably would not even have seen this Dragonfly if he had not been flying a few moments before this photo was taken. His camouflage is well-nigh perfect.

This dragonfly was photographed near Darwin Falls in Death Valley National Park and I believe it is a Flame Skimmer. If anyone has a better ID, though, I'd appreciate it.

Here's another dragonfly photographed on one of daily walks, this a Blue-eyed Darner. I wasn't around yesterday because we were hiking again, this time in the North Cascades. We hiked about 11 miles up to Cutthroat Pass and back. Photos to follow next week.

Photographed at the Barron Falls overlook, the dragonfly has been identified by my friend, Fizgig, as a female Scarlet Percher. The male of this species is red but the female is this yellowish color, a great example of sexual dimorphism.

This dragonfly is the Four-spotted Skimmer, Libellula quadrimaculata. It is, as Sonja has pointed out, the state insect of Alaska. It was photographed along the Auke Nu trail above Juneau while we were hiking there.
