While in Michigan we spent a day at Millennium Park near Grand Rapids and along the Grand River. One of the highlights of a great day spent hiking and doing photography was turtles. These were photographed along the edge of the river. The larger turtle is a Spiny Soft-shell Turtle and the smaller turtle is a Painted Turtle.

This is a Painted Turtle. He has to be turned upside down to see the reason for his name. The underside of his shell is beautifully marked with red and yellow. He was photographed along the Grand River in Michigan in Millennium Park near Grand Rapids when we were there recently.

These turtles were photographed in Millennium Park near Grand Rapids, Michigan. My wife and I were there recently for a wedding and to visit with family. We saw more turtles than I have ever seen before, including this Common Snapping Turtle and a Painted Turtle, the Snapper the larger of the two.

Thought I'd post some reptiles and amphibians today. This is a Painted Turtle that my grandkids found near our home and brought to show me. It is a common freshwater turtle that can be found across North America. Its name refers especially to the beautiful red, yellow and black underside of its shell only just visible in the photo.

This turtle is very common across the USA and southern Canada but always a nice find. It is the Painted Turtle, Chrysemys picta. This example was photographed in western Michigan. We were camped with family along the Thornapple River and one of the children found it. We managed to get a few photos before he dived back into the river.

While in the area of Medical Lake west of Spokane we saw this turtle crossing a rather busy road and stopped to rescue him. When we saw how beautiful he was we also took pictures, though much of his beauty is on the underside of his shell. His yellow-striped head and legs and a hint of the red and black marking on his shell can be seen. We left him at the side of nearby pond and found out later that he is a Painted Turtle, Chrysemys picta. There are more pictures of him including a picture of his underside at the link below. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/grass-widow...
