Winter Skies

There have been a number of friends here on Ipernity who have asked whether we are okay since I've not been on Ipernity much for well over a month. I've reposted this old photo by way of letting you all know that we are okay, just a bit overwhelmed with all that's happening in our lives. Apologies, too, to those whose photos and comments I've missed. Around the time I stopped posting I started a remodeling project, a basement bathroom and am still working on that. This has involved putting in new cabinets, flooring, trim, plumbing lights, shower, etc., and it has been slow work since I have had to learn as I go and have had to deal with a lot of interruptions and frustrations. Many things have turned into twice as much work as I expected. The remodeling project, however, is not the main reason for my absence. My parents, who are 90 and 89 and live in a retirement home, have required a great deal more attention recently, especially my mother, whose dementia has gotten worse to the point my father is unable to take care of her. They live in Michigan and that has made things much more difficult. I and a brother have had to take responsibility for their finances, their health care and are now trying to find a better place for my mother. This has involved a great deal of paperwork and many phone calls - I was on the phone three times already this morning and am waiting for a phone call now. I simply have not had the time or energy to be on Ipernity as a result. The photo is of Lynden, Washington, the town in which we lived before my retirement and was taken on one of our daily walks. I've posted it because we are in Lynden since Saturday and will be here until New Year's Day. We are visiting family here and celebrating the holidays. The original caption for this photo, taken nine years ago, follows. Weary of flowers, thought I'd post a picture taken just north of the town where we live, a picture taken last February as the the sun was setting. It was taken, however, toward the northeast, catching the light of the setting sun on the storm clouds gathering in that direction. As is usually the case with a northeaster, we had snow and bad weather out of this if I remember correctly.

Sunset and Storm over Lake Michigan

This was the storm we watched as it formed over Lake Michigan and moved inland to the north. We, my youngest brother, a friend and I were at Ludington State Park in Michigan to photograph the sunset and the lighthouse there when the storm developed.

This was the lighthouse at Big Sable Point on Lake Michigan's eastern shore. We were there to photograph the sunset and had the bonus of storm forming over the lake and moving away to the north.

Last week I went with my youngest brother and a friend to Ludington State Park and the Big Sable Lighthouse there. We went to photograph the sunset but witnessed a storm forming over the lake and moving toward the north of us. This was the tail of the storm just before sundown.

Last January about this time we had an ice storm that left many opportunities for photos such as these. This year it has been much warmer and we've had much less snow. I enjoyed photographing the ice but am not complaining about a milder winter.

Photographed after an ice storm last January 9. Today, just a day short of that date, we are enjoying warmer temperatures and no snow or ice.

We had an ice storm early in January, not enough ice to cause any serious damage to trees or power lines, but enough to provide photos like this and these are only a few of the hundreds I took that day.

These are the needles of a Ponderosa Pine covered with ice after an ice storm we had earlier in the year. It didn't cause much damage to trees or power lines, but it was a fabulous occasion for photos.

This is a photo from our January ice storm, this end of a branch from a small tree. The photo opportunities were incredible and though it wasn't sunny when the photos were taken the light was good.

This is another photo from ice storm we suffered last winter and shows just how much ice was on the branches of the trees and shrubs and everything else. We've been extremely busy over the holidays with family coming and going and I have had almost no time to post anything.

Here's another of my wife's photos from the ice storm last February. It would have taken some effort to get the ice off this SUV but the roads were impossible anyway.

Grand Teton Sunset

The second evening of our stay in Teton National Park, we watched a storm move through the mountains and the setting sun illuminating somew of the peaks when the storm was moving on. This is Grand Teton, its head still in the storm and its lower slopes lit by the sun.

This was taken along the Glenn Highway between Glennallen and Palmer, Alaska, at an overlook for Matanuska Glacier which was the other direction from the photo. There was a storm moving in over the peaks to the north, but still some sunlight on them.
