We have been traveling round the lower loop of Yellowstone's main road starting at the west entrance and heading clockwise around the upper west side of the loop and the across the north to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Now we had south along the east side of the loop and come to Hayden Valley, a great place to watch for wildlife and a beautifully scenic area upriver from the canyon. These photos were taken at different times of the year and most of them have Amethyst Mountain in the background, if I am not mistaken.

This is Hayden Valley on the southwest side of Yellowstone National Park. The river is the Yellowstone and the valley is notable both for its scenery and its wildlife.

This is a typical scene in central Alberta in the summer, canola fields under a beautiful sky. We've been in Alberta a number of times recently to visit our daughter and her family there.

This is a native thistle, gone to seed and with the seeds of Meadow Salsify caught in the old flower heads.

This is the seed head of Meadow Salsify, not a native plant but very common in our area and photographed on one of our daily walks.

Here's another of the photos we've taken of plants that have gone to seed. There's not much blooming anymore in our area due to the dry conditions we've experienced and the fact that the end of summer is near.

Taken on one of our daily walks this and the insets show some of the end-of-the-summer plants we've photographed, here a grass with the wind-blown seeds of another plant caught in it.

This photo was taken from the same place as the previous photo, the Diablo Lake overlook on Highway 20, the North Cascades Highway, and in the area of North Cascades National Park. The lake is Diablo Lake formed by the Diablo Dam, one of the dams that provide hydroelectric power for the city of Seattle and the peak in the background is Colonial Peak. The photo was taken in summer rather than autumn.

This was taken from the Serene Lake trail which I hiked recently with my brother, Tim.

Taken along one of the trails at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park, this shows the mountain as well as one of the wildflower meadows, in this case mostly Bistort, Lupine and Paintbrush. It is not very often in our hiking that we see such an abundance of wildflowers as we saw here.

Mount Baker is an active volcano in the North Cascades. At 10,778 feet (3,285 m), it is the fourth-highest mountain in Washington State and the sixth-highest in the Cascades. On still clear days one can see steam escaping from the main vent which is on the opposite side of the peak from which this pictures was taken. This is another of my wife, Nancy's, photos.
