Taken on a walk near our home, this is typical of what winter has brought for us, lots of snow and frost, low temperatures and no signs of spring yet.

Winter

We have had a long and hard winter. It began late November with a blizzard that brought over 60 cm of snow and we have had snow on the ground ever since. We had snow twice last week, about 30 cm the first time and 5 cm the second time. We've also had very cold temperatures part of the winter and a lot of freezing fog. These photos were taken on one of my daily walks near home and with my old 7D which I've been using since I wrecked my camera.

White Sands National Park

I've been posting a few photos from our recent trip, mostly panoramas taken with my phone, before finishing the long series of Yellowstone photos. This is another panorama taken at White Sands National Monument in the Tularosa Basin near Alamogordo, New Mexico. This is not snow but gypsum sand that has formed dunes and flats over a huge area. The area of the park is completely surrounded by the White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base and occasionally has to be closed when missile tests are being conducted.

This is another photo from our snowshoeing excursion to Artist's Point, a popular viewing area in the North Cascades near Mount Baker. It can be reached by car in the summer but only with skis or snowshoes in the winter. We had just started our trek and were following the edge of a ski run when this was taken.

This photo is of Kulshan Ridge, the ridge north of Mount Baker on which Artist's Point viewing area is located. The viewing area at this time was under ten to twelve feet of snow (3.5 meters). Taken in the morning, this was our destination since Mount Baker lies over the ridge.

This and the insets are photos from a snowshoeing trip up to Artist's Point near Mount Baker. The mountain in the background is Mount Shuksan and Lake Anne, a popular summer hiking destination, lies just beyond the ridge in the upper middle of the photo.

Taken as we went up to Artist's Point near Mount Baker on snowshoes. These tracks were in the basin below us near Upper Bagley Lake. We had near-perfect weather for our excursion and the light and colors were magnificent.

I am as jealous as I can possibly be. This is one of my wife's photos from yesterday's excursion to the Skagit Valley, and it is, in my opinion, the best photo of the day. I'm so envious I stole it and posted it here!

In Explore October 23, 2009, #147. Taken on a flight home from Minneapolis earlier this week. I was disappointed that we didn't fly closer to Rainier, but was able to get this shot before we flew into heavy cloud cover. I'm posting this photo now because we will be away for a few days visiting our handicapped son in Spokane and I am not sure how much opportunity I'll have to post any photos.

Formal Gardens, Manito City Park, Spokane

This is one of the most beautiful city parks I have ever seen. It includes these formal gardens, a conservatory, a beautiful Japanese garden, very large rose, dahlia and perennial gardens, a small lake, a beautiful drive and various recreation areas. Highly recommended to anyone who may be in the Spokane area.

Old Mineral Baths at Longmire

Longmire, named after the family that ran a resort and spa there for many years, is on the south side of Mount Rainier National Park. These old mineral baths were part of that resort and are now part of the scenery on the Trail of the Shadows at Longmire. Mount Rainier is an active volcano and the Longmire area is full of hotsprings, mineral springs, and other activity, all the result of the melt water from Rainier seeping through the ground and heat. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/05/mount-raini...
