Also known as Franklin's Lady's Slipper, this was one of the few orchids we saw in Alaska and these were well past their peak, though we found enough good flowers to photograph. This photo is my wife's taken along the Richardson Highway near Thompson Pass. The Sparrow's-egg Lady's Slipper is not found as far south as Washington but is common further north in the Canadian Rockies and in Alaska.

Thought I'd post photos of some Lady's Slippers today, flowers that we found and photographed on our 2014 trip through the Canadian Rockies. This one is Franklin's Lady's Slipper or the Sparrow's Egg Lady's Slipper, Cypripedium passerinum. It is fairly common in British Columbia and Alberta but does not grow in Washington. In fact, Montana is the one state other than Alaska in which it grows.

Hiking the Berg Lake trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park we found these both at Kinney Lake and in Whitehorn Basin where we camped the first night. At Kinney Lake they were still wet with the rain that had fallen the previous night and there were only a few flowers that had not gone by, but at Whitehorn they were at their peak. They are not found in Washington so we are always happy to see them again in Canada.

This flower is a bit unusual in that the dorsal sepal is nearly straight up instead of hanging over the pouch.

Also known as Franklin's Lady's Slipper, Cypripedium passerinum is found for the most part north of the US-Canadian border, though there are locations in Montana. These (ncluding the insets) were photographed in Kootenay National Park in British Columbia. They are often difficult to photograph since they tend to grow under bushes and in heavy brush.

While in Edmonton last summer a friend too me out orchid hunting for a day and this was one of the native orchids we saw and photographed. This is Cypripedium passerinum, the Sparrow's Egg Lady's Slipper, or Franklin's Lady's Slipper. It has small flowers, around two inches across and is quite common in northern regions, though not found at all in the state of Washington. These were starting to fade, but the flower below, photographed on another occasion in Mount Robson Provincial Park, is fresh and new.

This Lady's Slipper was starting to go by, but was still beautiful, hence the photo. A small beetle can be seen on the front of the pouch when viewed large. Photographed near Kinney Lake, Mount Robson Provincial Park.

One more shot, this time a close-up, of a Lady's Slipper I had never seen before our trip to Mount Robson, and which we found in abundance near Kinney Lake in Mount Robson Provincial Park. This was published in the April, 2011, issue of Orchids, the magazine of the American Orchid Society, in an article titled "Taking Aim."

On our way to Edmonton two weeks ago we stopped briefly at Mount Robson Provincial Park and I hiked a ways up the Berg Lake Trail. My wife stayed in the car and slept with a bad headache. I went as far as the Kinney Lake campground and found a few of these, Cypripedium passerinum, still in bloom. This was very late for these to be in flower at all, but the lateness is due to our cold and wet weather. There were also a few of the Large Yellow Lady's Slipper in bloom as well as thousands of the Small Round-leaf Orchis. There had been rain the night before and the trails were very muddy but the rain only made the flowers more photogenic. The mosquitoes were also quite bad, too, though not as bad as in Edmonton, and that made the photography even more challenging. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/c...
