This is another shot of Canary Spring (see previous photo) but this of the front of the spring. It is obvious from the photo, too, why these are called "terraces". Canary Spring is on the south end of the Lower Terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park.

Canary Spring is on the main part of the Lower Terraces of the Mammoth Hot Springs area in Yellowstone National Park. It is one of the more active parts of the Lower Terraces and can be seen both from below and from the west side. This was taken from the boardwalk on the west side and looks over the top of the spring and across the valley.

Canary Spring is at Mammoth Terraces on the north end of Yellowstone National Park. It is one of the few areas of the terraces that is active at present. The terraces are formed by hot water seeping up through limestone and depositing the dissolved limestone as terraces. The terraces are bone white or gray when inactive, but when active are colored by algae that live in the hot water. I've posted this picture because we were in Yellowstone briefly last week, but I have not had time to look at the pictures we took. In fact, I have not even downloaded them from the camera.

This is another photo taken in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park. These springs which have been active for many years are the far southern end of the Upper Terraces. The spring are the result of hot water seeping up through the ground and dissolving and redepositing the limestone bedrock. The colors of the springs are the colors of algae which grow in the hot water.
