There were two of these Garter Snakes when I came on the scene but one of them quickly disappeared. The other draped itself over this old log and stayed there for a photo. The photo was taken at Hog Lake in eastern Washington.

This Coachwhip Snake was the most exciting thing we saw in the ghost town of Ballarat, west of Death Valley. The Coachwhip is a long, slender, non-poisonous snake.

This is a Western Garter Snake my wife and I found while walking near our house. Garter snakes are not poisonous and this species is quite common in the west.

Too Big a Bite

This snake was found dead with the frog also dead and partially swallowed. Apparently the frog was too big for the snake. Photographed in Barker, Texas.

Barker, Texas. "Red on yellow kills a fellow; red on black won't hurt Jack" - that's the rhyme used to teach the difference between a poisonous coral snake and a non-poisonous Kingsnake.
