Dendrobium laevifolium

Dendrobium laevifolium belongs to section Oxyglossum of the genus but is a warm-growing species, one of the few in that section. It ordinarily has bright purple-pink flowers, but this clone is unusual in that the flowers are a pale peach color and are smaller than other plants of the species, 2cm long. The plant is also smaller, only 4.5cm. The species is from New Guinea, the Solomon Island, Bougainville and other South Pacific Islands.

Dendrobium cuthbertsonii

This tiny orchid comes in many color forms and has flower that are huge for the size of the plant and which are also very long lasting, making it one of the most desirable of miniature orchids.
The plants are an inch or less tall with remarkably pebbled foliage, and the flowers are around an inch in size (3 cm), and last six months or more.
The plant is native to New Guinea and is cool growing with a reputation for being a bit difficult to grow, but can be grown to a large specimen with good culture.
Some blog posts for this species follow, the first showing a bicolor form, the second different color forms and third the semi-alba form also shown below.

Dendrobium violaceum

This orchid species is from Papua New Guinea and belongs to the Oxyglossum group of Dendrobiums. The species varies greatly in size, with this plant 8-10 inches tall and another plant we own only about 2 inches tall. These flower opened a bright pink and gradually faded to the more muted shades shown here. They have ample time to do that since the flowers last for many months.

Dendrobium agathodaemonis

|
This plant is often considered to be a variety of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, which it does resemble in some respects. It is different, however, in the fact that the growths are generally smaller and thinner than those of cuthbertsonii, and the flowers lack the dark coloring on the midlobe of the lip - they are nearly pure white in this case. My plant is 4 cm tall with flowers that are very close to that size and which dwarf the plant. The plant is a prolific bloomer with long-lasting flowers and is in bloom nearly year around. It is native to Papua New Guinea.

This tiny Dendrobium is native to the highlands of Papua New Guinea. The plant, half an inch tall, is dwarfed by the one and a quarter inch flowers. It comes in a variety of bright colors and requires cool temperatures. It is considered by some to be synonymous with Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, but lacks the dark markings on the lip and the plant lacks the swollen pseudobulbs of that species.

Dendrobium hellwigianum

Dendrobium hellwigianum is another high altitude, cool growing species Oxyglossum Dendrobium from Papua New Guinea. It is a small plant, four inches tall, with one inch flowers. It blooms profusely and my plant has 50 or 60 flowers at present.

Dendrobium cuthbertsonii var. semi-alba

|
This tiny orchid species produces huge flowers that last for six months and that bloom in a rainbow of colors. It is from Papua New Guinea and requires cool temperatures, high light and good humidity. This plant is referred to as "semi-alba" for its very pale color and for the fact that it retains the markings on the lip. The similarity between these flowers and the flowers in the next post is obvious and this is one of the parents of that hybrid, though a red-flowered plant was used instead of this pale variety.

My favorite orchid. Tiny plant, huge flowers, rainbow colors, long-lasting (flowers that last 6 months or more). What more could anyone ask?
