Moonscape Overlook

Moonscape Overlook or Skyline Rim is near Hanksville, Utah, and is well known for its amazing views of the desert landscape below and well-named. We were there one of the first mornings of our trip to Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California. We car-camped there and watched both the sunset and the sunrise, this photo taken in the evening and the inset the next morning.

Taken at dawn at Moonscape Overlook in Utah (near Capitol Reef National Park) the photo shows a woman who was far more brave than my wife or I. She is standing on an isolated pinnacle above the valley floor hundreds of feet below, a pinnacle that is reached by a narrow ledge. We were at Moonscape early in our trip to Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California. We car camped there overnight and watched both sunset and sunrise, this photo taken at sunrise. One word of warning, though. The road is very rough and best reached with a high-clearance vehicle.

The first evening in Utah this past spring we camped on federal land just outside the entrance to Canyonlands National Park. This was the sunset that evening from our camp.

As I mentioned in my last posts, we celebrated our 48th anniversary this past Sunday. Here we are in Canyonlands National Park camped at Murphy Point after backpacking in earlier in the day, We are wondering whether the storms moving through the area were going to affect our plans to sleep under the stars, since our daughter, who took the photo, had the tent. We had a few drops of rain, but mostly wind and survived the night, though our sleeping bags were covered with sand when we awoke next morning.

This was taken from our last campsite in Big Bend National Park. We camped that night near the Paint Gap Hills and left the next morning for San Antonio where we spent two days before dropping our daughter off at the airport and starting the long drive home ourselves.

After picking up our oldest daughter in San Antonio we traveled to Big Bend National Park where we hiked and camped for four days. This panorama was taken on one of our hikes. The Lost Mine Trail is a popular hike that offers stunning view of Casa Grande and the Chisos Basin. It is about five miles with 1300 feet of elevation gain.

These photos are from a 2016 trip to Alaska. Polychrome Pass is in Denali National Park where we camped at Sanctuary River and from there explored the park. We did not see Denali Peak, however, since there were wildfires burning in the area and it was very smoky.

The sunrise the last morning of our backpacking excursion in the Colorado Rockies was beautiful and well worth the trip.

Sunrise the last morning of our backpacking trip in the Colorado Rockies was spectacular, worth every step and worth a wet night in our tents.

After the Rain

The last night of our backpacking adventure we had heavy rain. My brother's tent, quite old, leaked badly and the four of us ended up in our small tent for the night. The next morning was sunny and pleasant and we got most of the gear dried out before hiking out.

Chisos Mountains, Big Bend National Park

These are the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park in Texas. The photo was taken from our backcountry campsite near the Paint Gap Hills. We had spent the day kayaking the Rio Grande in the southwest corner of the park and in the evening had driven back to this location where we stayed the night at what was little more than a gravel turnoff along a dirt road. We've been away from home now for nearly two weeks and will not be home again for another week. We left Monday, the 10th, and drove through Idaho and Montana to Sheridan, Wyoming, found a place to park our van and slept the night. It was 2 degrees F (-17C) in the morning and we had high winds, blowing snow, and slippery bridges as we drove through Wyoming and Colorado. The check engine light had come on during the day (it proved later to be bad gas) and instead of staying the night in Amarillo, Texas, as we planned, we drove on through the night to San Antonio where we found a dealer and had the car checked out. That drive brought us to 75F (24C) temperatures in San Antonio where we checked into our guest house. We spent two wonderful days in San Antonio, walking the riverwalk and biking the mission trail, as well as enjoying the wonderful guesthouse, a historic house on the river, that some of our children had booked for us. We enjoyed the city especially because we had not been there since 1996, when we flew to Houston with friends and drove there. Leaving San Antonio we drove southwest to Big Bend National Park where we spent the next five days, hiking, kayaking and exploring. When I have opportunity to post more photos from that trip I'll describe our time there in more detail. We left there yesterday and drove to Carlsbad Caverns and spent the rest of a cold, miserable day touring the caverns. We are leaving shortly for Guadalupe Mountains National Park and hope to spend today and tomorrow hiking and exploring there. The weather report, which were rather grim for that area have improved dramatically, and so we have, more or less. kept to our original plans which include camping there tonight and possibly tomorrow, spending a quiet Sunday in Carlsbad and then going on to Grand Canyon. Since we need to get going, I'll catch up on commenting over the weekend.

Camping at Huntoon Point

Huntoon Point marks the western end of Kulshan Ridge, a long ridge that runs from Mount Baker towards Mount Shuksan. Artist's Point is on the ridge also, near where we were standing when this photo was taken. That evening there were a number of campers up near Artist's Point and one group up on Huntoon Point, not a place I would camp if there was any wind, but that Saturday was a quiet, windless day and quite warm. Their tent and several of them are visible in the photo.
