I posted a picture of another species in this genus, Mediocalcar versteegii, a few days ago. Here is Mediocalcar decoratum, also from the New Guinea highlands and a delightful miniature orchid. The plant is much more compact than the other species I posted and is very easy to grow and flower, though it prefers cool temperatures and high humidity. The flowers come from the top of tiny and fat little pseuobulbs or stems with a fan of three of four leaves at the top, visible in the photo. The new growths develop at the top of the previous growths and so the plant rambles and become a mat of growths and flowers. The inset photo shows the whole plant, but the photos may be misleading since the flowers are only 0.5 cm and the growths 1 cm tall. The plant shown is only about 15 cm across.

This is Mediocalcar versteegii from New Guinea. Like the other species in the genus it has flowers with unusual color combinations and is a rambling plant, each new growth coming from the top of the previous growth. It blooms late winter to early spring and the flowers are not long-lasting. I have my plant in a pot, but most of it is not in the pot and doesn't need to be. There is a picture of the plant with its flowers in the inset.

Mediocalcar decoratum is from the mountains of Papua New Guinea and is a miniature orchid species with tiny succulent leaves, little cylindrical pseudobulbs and these colorful flowers which look like candy corns before they open. The individual flowers are less than 1 cm in size. There are more photos of the flowers, buds and plant at the link below.

This orchid species is very tiny. The cylindrical growth with their "propeller" of little leaves are only 2 centimeters tall and the flowers less than 1 centimeter. Each new grow grows on top of the previous and the plant soon makes a mat of growths that are covered with flowers in the spring. It is and easy plant to grow but likes cooler temperatures and good humidity. This particular example has foliage that is slightly variegated and is especially desirable for that reason. It is from the highlands of New Guinea.

This tiny little orchid species is from Papua New Guinea and is known in our house as the "Candy Corn Orchid" for its resemblance to the little orange and yellow corn-kernel-shaped candies. It blooms prolifically in the winter and though the flowers are not that long-lived puts on a good show. These flowers are less than 1cm, about a quarter of an inch, and the plant becomes a thick mat of little stubby growths with a fan of fat propeller-like leaves. This is the second in my 100 photos for 2014 project.

This very unusual orchid species is from Papua New Guinea. It belong to a small genus of about twenty species, mostly from the cloud forests and most with brightly colored flowers. The individual growths, one of which is shown here, are 2-3 inches but grow on top of each other in a rambling fashion.

This is the plant whose flowers are shown below. As I noted in that post, the plant tends to ramble all over and is impossible to confine to a pot. It is from New Guinea and prefers cool temperatures and good humidity.

Mediocalcar decoratum is in the same genus as the plant pictured below and has similar though differently colored flowers, but the plant is much smaller and more easily contained. The individual growths are only a half inch in size, each of them with a cylindrical pseudobulb topped by three fat little leaves. Like its relative, it is from New Guinea.
