Dendrobium agathodaemonis is a tiny orchid species from the mountains of Papua New Guinea. The growths, visible in this shot, are less than two centimeters tall but the flowers, which last six months or longer, are much larger. It is closely related to Dendrobium cuthbertsonii but lacks the darker markings of the lip of that species. It requires very good light and cool temperatures.

This is a tiny plant, not even an inch tall, with one inch flowers that last upwards of six months. It is from Papua New Guinea and grows at high elevations, preferring cool temperatures and high light. It belongs to the Oxyglossum section of the genus Dendrobium. I grew this from a tiny seedling.

In Explore March 4, 2011, #330. Also known as Dendrobium cuthbertsonii var. agathodaemonis, this tiny orchid from New Guinea has flowers that dwarf the plant and that last six months or more. This plant is often considered to be a variety of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, which it does resemble in some respects. It is different, however, in the fact that the growths are generally smaller and thinner than those of cuthbertsonii, and the flowers lack the dark coloring on the midlobe of the lip - they are nearly pure white in this case. My plant is 4 cm tall with flowers that are very close to that size and which dwarf the plant. The plant is a prolific bloomer with long-lasting flowers and is in bloom nearly year around. It is native to Papua New Guinea. Published in the December, 2011, issue of Orkideer, the magazine of the Swedish Orchid Society in an article on orchid photography. This tiny Dendrobium is native to the highlands of Papua New Guinea. The plant, half an inch tall, is dwarfed by the one and a quarter inch flowers. It comes in a variety of bright colors and requires cool temperatures. It is considered by some to be synonymous with Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, but lacks the dark markings on the lip and the plant lacks the swollen pseudobulbs of that species. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2012/10/dendrobium-agatho...

This plant is seldom out of bloom since the flowers last six months or more. It is related to Dendrobium cuthbertsonii (posted yesterday) and is considered synonymous with that species by some. It lacks, however, the darker markings on the lip and has growths that are much more spindly than Dendrobium cuthbertsonii. Those differences may not warrant status as a separate species, but are certainly obvious even to a casual observer. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2013/02/dendrobium-agatho...
