This very unusual orchid species is from Papua New Guinea. It belong to a small genus of about twenty species, mostly from the cloud forests and most with brightly colored flowers. The individual growths, one of which is shown here, are 2-3 inches but grow on top of each other in a rambling fashion. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2013/01/mediocalcar-verst...

This is the plant whose flowers are shown below. As I noted in that post, the plant tends to ramble all over and is impossible to confine to a pot. It is from New Guinea and prefers cool temperatures and good humidity. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2013/01/mediocalcar-verst...

Mediocalcar decoratum is in the same genus as the plant pictured below and has similar though differently colored flowers, but the plant is much smaller and more easily contained. The individual growths are only a half inch in size, each of them with a cylindrical pseudobulb topped by three fat little leaves. Like its relative, it is from New Guinea. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2013/02/mediocalcar-decor...

This little species from New Guinea is notable for the rainbow of colors in which it flowers, for the longevity of the flowers (each flower last six months or more) and for its beautiful foliage, visible in the picture. The plant is only an inch tall and is dwarfed by the one inch flowers. These flowers are bicolored, but they also come in plain shades of red, orange, yellow, white and pink. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2013/02/dendrobium-cuthbe...
