This plant was awarded by the American Orchid Society as Restrepia sanguinea but I've been told it's actually Restrepia guttulata. The Restrepias are a genus of orchids that all have these oddly shaped flowers, most of them in bright colors with spots and stripes. The inset photo provides a close-up of the parts of the flower which look like a little face. They are from Mexico, Central and South America, in this case from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. They are one of the few orchids that can be grown from a leaf that's been removed and they belong to the same group of orchids as Masdevallia and Pleurothallis.

Can you see him? He comes from Colombia. This is a closeup of a small orchid, Restrepia guttulata. In this case the flowers are 5-6 cm on a 10 cm plant with stiff stems and heart-shaped leaves. Interestingly, Restrepias are among the few orchids that can be propagated from leaf cuttings. More photos here: orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2011/10/restrepia-sanguin... This is another shot of a species I've previously posted. It is from Columbia, produces its rather short-lived flowers from the top of each leaf stalk and continues to produce them as long as the stalk is alive. Like others in the genus it is one of the few orchids that can be reproduced with leaf cuttings, though the cutting must include the base of the leaf and the top of the stalk. The flowers are two inches in size and come on a plant that is eight inches tall. If you look carefully at the second photo you can see a little gnome face in the center of the flower. This was awarded by the American Orchid Society as Restrepia sanguinea, but I am told (see below) that it is actually Restrepia guttulata. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2011/10/restrepia-sanguin...
