When in Alaska in 2015 we stayed a night in Palmer, north of Anchorage, and spent a day exploring Hatcher Pass and the now-closed Indpendence Gold Mine. The whole area of the pass is beautiful and the mine is fascinating.

This is the old gold-mining town of Independence, Alaska, in Hatcher Pass, north of Anchorage. The mine was one of the most successful in Alaska but closed in 1952.

As I noted with another post, we visited the Independence Mine in Hatcher Pass one of the last days of our Alaska trip. In fact we spent a whole afternoon there. This photo, taken on one of the trails through the area of the mine, shows what's left of the old tracks for the train that carried the ore from the mine to the area where it was processed. The Independence Mine was the second richest lode in Alaska. In its peak year the mine provided work for over 200 men and produced over a million dollars in gold (seventeen million dollars today). The mine closed in 1952 and is now a state historical park. This photo is also noteworthy since it is an example of what my new camera, the Canon 7D Mark ii does with in-camera HDR.

One of the last days we were in Alaska we drove first from Glennallen to Palmer and then after getting a motel for the evening drove to Hatcher Pass and the Independence Mine. This photo was taken near the top of Hatcher Pass.

These are some of the ruins of Independence Mine in Hatcher Pass near Wasilla and Palmer, Alaska. Some of the buildings have been preserved and restored but the area around the mine has been allowed to deteriorate. Hatcher Pass is a beautiful drive and we had a beautiful day when we drove the gravel road through the pass last Saturday.
