Artist's Point

If you follow the Mount Baker Highway to its end, something that can only be done for a few months at the end of the summer, then you come to Artist's Point, where you can park your vehicle, do some hiking and enjoy the spectacular views of Mount Baker and of Mount Shuksan. Our son and daughter-in-law were visiting recently and had never been up to Artist's Point. The weather was not very good while they were staying with us and so he and I took the only chance we had and drove up one afternoon. We never did see Mount Baker or Mount Shuksan, but were able to do a bit a hiking around and to enjoy some of the scenery as the clouds moved in and out. This view looks north and further views can be found at ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2010/09/artists-poi...

Fort Worden

Fort Worden is one of the coastal forts on Puget Sound built during the late 1800's. It is near Port Townsend on the west side of the Sound on the Olympic Peninsula. This photo was taken at Battery Kinzie, a part of the fort that is down on the beach at Point Wilson. The battery is a great place for picture taking, since it has been left to the elements for the most part and is also not completely underground like Fort Ebey. For more information on these forts and other pictures see: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/07/fort-ebey-f...

Erythronium montanum

Erythronium montanum is our Avalanche Lily, blooming as the snow melts. We have seen it by the millions, covering whole fields in the Olympics, especially along the Obstruction Point Road when the road is first opened in July or August. This flower was photographed along the Obstruction Point Road last year on the day that the road was finally cleared of snow. In fact, we waited for the grader to move as it came back from clearing the last areas of the road. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/09/olympic-nat...

Table Mountain from Artist's Point

This was taken on a recent snowshoeing excursion to Artist's Point in the North Cascades near Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan. My youngest brother, Tim, my youngest son, Edward and I had a great day but the weather was not clear and the peaks were seldom visible. Last week our local paper reported that they are going to try to get the road to Artist's Point open this summer (It never opened last summer due to heavy snowfall), but the paper reported that there was still 35 feet of snow above the roof of the building that houses the bathrooms at the Artist's Point parking area. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/05/artists-poi...
