When we found these plants at Aman Park in western Michigan we were not sure of their identity but later saw them in bloom elsewhere and realized they were a Phlox, we think Phlox divaricata, the Wild Blue Phlox.

Spring Color at Manito

We travel nearly every month to eastern Washington, to the Spokane area, to visit our handicapped son. Quite often we spend a day or part of day at Manito City Park in Spokane, one of the most beautiful city parks we have ever seen. This photo was taken there in the spring and shows some of the spring color between the perennial gardens and the rose garden. Seeing all this color even in a photo makes me very eager for spring, but that seems a long way off when we were snowshoeing yesterday.

Didn't quite get the composition on this but thought it was worth posting anyway. The photo was taken on the Winchester Mountain trail and looks back toward Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan, but neither were visible that day. The day started fairly nice, but soon clouded over and threatened rain. The flowers in the foreground are the Spreading Phlox, Phlox diffusa.

The hike to Lake Ann was at the peak of the wildflower season and this was one of the wildflowers we photographed, Phlox diffusa, the Spreading Phlox. The photo was taken by my wife and was the best photo of this species that either of us were able to get.

This was taken near the top of the ridge and shows the abundance of wildflowers growing on the ridge. The flowers in this photo are primarily Lupines, Arrowleaf Balsamroots, and Cushion Phlox. More pictures and the story of our hike can be found on my blog at: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2010/06/manastash-r... .

I believe I have the identification correct on this, but do not know if it is a native or a garden escape where we found it. It was photographed in Turkey Run State Park in Indiana. At the time we photographed it there were a lot of Swallowtails visiting the flowers but we did not manage to get any good pictures of them. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/11/turkey-run-...
