Dead Horse Point is in a state park near Canyonlands National Park. The point is connected by a very narrow neck to the plateau nearby and was once used as a corral for wild horse. The cowboys would drive the horses there, take the best and leave the rest to die, hence the name of the point. We've been there several times, with this photo from a 2022 visit to the park and point.

Taken at Desert View, just inside the east entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. We had driven here from Cedar City, Utah, and would shortly find place to camp for the night along a forest service road, before driving on into the park the next day and camping in Mather Campground for three nights. We spent three days hiking the Rim trail, the Bright Angel trail and the South Kaibab trail, the latter two down into the canyon.

On our way to Grand Canyon we followed Highway 89 through Marble Canyon. Between the towns of Jacob Lake and Bitter Springs the highway crosses the Colorado River over the Navajo Bridge. The bridge was built 1993-1995 and stands side-by-side with an older bridge built from 1925-1927 and which was at the time the largest steel span bridge in the world. The older bridge, too light for modern traffic, is now only a pedestrian bridge providing wonderful views of the Colorado River 467 feet below. The bridge was built in the 1920's because the only crossing of the Colorado for 800 miles was Lee's Ferry. More information about the bridges can be found at the National Parks website: www.nps.gov/places/navajo-bridge.htm .

The new Navajo Bridge was built in the 1990's since the older bridge was no longer safe for modern traffic. The older bridge from which the photo was taken stands alongside of it and is now a pedestrian bridge. We walked the old bridge for its wonderful views of the Colorado River and in hopes of seeing California Condors which often roost on the bridge. We did not see any condors here but later saw them at Grand Canyon.

On our way home from the Grand Canyon last year we stopped briefly at Horseshoe Bend and walked to the overlook where I took this panorama with my cell phone. Horseshoe Bend is on the Colorado River and is near the town of Page, Arizona. It is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Almost our last stop before heading home was the Grand Canyon. We only saw the South Rim of the Canyon. The north rim was still closed for the winter. At 7000 feet (2100 m) elevation it was still winter at the canyon, very cold and snow still on the ground. In spite of that it was very busy. This photo was taken from the Hermit's Point Road on the west side of the south rim, a road that tomorrow will be closed to cars. It was taken at one of the viewpoints along the road at a spot known as The Abyss and shows the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon on the right. I had not seen the canyon since I was 13 years old and my wife had never seen it, so it was great to have been there, though our stay was only two days and two nights.
