9351 –Ready to roll……

15 Feb 2024 8 2 106
Another look at the West Somerset Railway station at Minehead. This is the GWR-inspired Mogul No 9351 which is part of the WSR stock of locomotives. It will roll forward another few yards here before reversing onto the parallel line for a water refill before running further and then another switch onto this line again to shunt up to the full carriages that it has just uncoupled here. A 2-6-0 tender engine built in 1934. Green but the wheels and front smokebox are black with a red front nameplate. Enjoy full screen.

Waiting

A platform view of Minehead Station, Somerset. It was first opened in 1874 as the terminus of the Minehead Railway but closed in 1971. It was reopened in 1976 and is now the headquarters and terminus of the West Somerset heritage Railway. Since this was once a true country branch line of the old ‘Great Western Railway’ we still see the original benches. The train on the left is about to depart being pulled by a steam engine. Enjoy full screen. Have a great day.

All-aboard to Bishops Lydeard

Minehead, Somerset and the WSR terminus station. The start and end point for an exciting steam railway trip. These carriages are full to the brim with excited tourist, camera's at the ready but some are seated at dressed tables ready for a special afternoon tea. See adjacent photo for another look. Best full screen.

Minehead harbour

Walking around Minehead nowadays must be quite different fro what it was some years back. This harbour has been here since 1380. Privateers based at Minehead were involved in the war with Spain and France during 1625–1630 and again during the War of the Spanish Succession from 1702–1713. In the background here we see the white roof of the Butlin’s Holiday resort. HWW, have a great day.

Rainbow walkers!

A walk on the beach at Minehead, especially with a child or dog must always be a pleasant experience. Today the walkers have a special treat with this lovely rainbow. Photographed from the top edge of the promenade wall and path. Enjoy full size.

The south west coast path –start.

We are in the seaside town of Minehead, Somerset. Famed for a few things including the holiday resort of Butlins and the West Somerset Railway but few people in our country would know it is the start point for one of our longest and most attractive long-distance footpaths. I have walked on quite a few stretches of that path during my life but never imagined to stand at this point. A fitting tribute here with this sculpture showing an open map of the route. The South West Coast Path is England's longest waymarked long-distance footpath and a National Trail. It stretches for 630 miles, running from Minehead in Somerset, along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, to Poole Harbour in Dorset. The PiP shows an example of the path route.

AI, Herb style!

My idea of artificial intelligence here as we see this funny character made from real materials. Seen in Minehead, Somerset, a town where a lot of people have a sense of humour it seems. I think he is trying to send us a message. I have no idea what he/she was called nor what that message was about. He is around 1.5m high to the top of his antenna. Of course he is accompanied by a real fence gate too! Enjoy the weekend.

Old metal Head says "HFF t'yer all".

Another funny character seen in Minehead a short time ago. Made from a gas cylinder and bits of pipe. He looks ready for today’s hike in HFF land! The PiP shows his friend down the street. Enjoy the weekend.

The Old harbour, Minehead

A look at the deep wall of Minehead harbour. Being on the Bristol Channel it has one of the highest rise and fall tides in the world. Quite by chance the highest is at the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, a place I also visited only days ago. HWW, have a great day.

A fisherman of Minehead

Seen in the front garden of one of the old cottages along Minehead promenade. I presume he went fishing from the old harbour just across the road from here and he’s had a successful catch by the look of things! Enjoy the weekend.
