Moirlanich Longhouse

16 Jun 2024 14 10 137
Enjoy a few images of this old long-house just outside the village of Killin in the Scottish Trossachs. Moirlanich Longhouse is an outstanding example of a 19th-century cruck frame cottage and byre, set in beautiful Glen Lochay countryside near Killin, and retaining many original features. The cottage offers a tantalising glimpse into late 19th-century life in rural Scotland. The walls are made of two layers of lime-washed drystone rubble, and the longhouse was originally roofed with thatch, but this replaced in the 1940s with functional - if not terribly attractive - corrugated tin. In traditional Scottish longhouses the family and their livestock lived under one roof. One end of the longhouse was reserved for the livestock and the other end for the humans, with each chamber leading into the next. See PiPs Enjoy full screen

River harmony

13 Jun 2024 30 30 216
A river idyll here on the Lochay at Killin in the Scottish Trossachs. Not the ideal weather for such a photo one would have thought but it works well for me as I find the trees and their reflections frame the centre of attraction just perfectly. Best full screen Enjoy the day.

The Lochan na Lairige reservoir dam.

Another look at this reservoir and its dam (Lawers Dam), from the far end of its 2km length. Best full screen. Enjoy the day.

Beinn Ghlas

06 Jun 2024 17 16 205
A look at this popular Munro which hides its more famous neighbour Ben Lawers. We are on our way to Glen Lyon here and have a rare spot of blue skies I could not resist the Silver Birch trees. Being near the NT carpark for the most popular route to the two mountains, there is a steady trail of Munro Baggers (a group of people who feel the need to climb every one of the 282 Munro’s in Scotland. Munro = mountain over 3000ft) passing me by here. Beinn Ghlas is in fact 1,103 (3619 ft) and Ben Lawers 1,214 m (3984 ft) Enjoy full screen

The silver Falls of Dochard, Killin

Another capture of these falls that never fails to delight. The fifteen second exposure turns the fast spray into a silver silk curtain. Enjoy full screen

The Lochan na Lairige reservoir

01 Jun 2024 25 24 290
. A look at this stark reservoir on the edge of the Ben Lawers mountain range. It is retained by the Lawers Dam as shown in the PiP. At 2km long it is not so very big but has a wild attraction. The water is piped to the Finlarig Power Station (part of the Breadalbeane Hydro-electric power scheme) on the edge of the much larger Loch Tay a few miles lower down the mountain. Best full screen. Enjoy the day.

HFF ~ A Loch Tay fence

31 May 2024 34 45 268
Stood on the Loch’s southern end near the village of Killin. If we could see further (14 miles) we would see the northern end village of Kenmore. Our walk will take us left from here (west) for another half mile or so before returning back to the village via the banks of the River Lochay. Have a good weekend.

The Falls of Dochard, Killin

25 May 2024 25 23 277
The river Dochard looks almost at its best running through the large village of Killin. In this photo the water flow is quite docile but it was to get far rougher over the next few days. Our holiday cottage is hidden just behind the trees on the right Enjoy full screen

HFF ~ A wet walk in Glen Ogle

24 May 2024 31 43 248
A wet day does not deter us from a walk along this famous old disused railway line. We are heading towards the viaduct, a well-known photo attraction from our parking spot at Lochearnhead. Follow Pip for more info. Have a good weekend.

Lawers or The Lochan na Lairige Dam

23 May 2024 27 19 223
After yesterday’s photo of a close-up of three of the arches (pip) we see here two photos of the complete dam. There are in fact 6 arches to the left of centre and five on its right side. It was constructed in 1951-6 and measures 344m in length by 42m in height. It should be seen here that the wall is in fact solid to the top and there is no gap to let light (or water) through to the inside top of the arches and so an optical illusion there. Lochan Na Lairige is part of the Breadalbane Hydroelectric Scheme. The alternative front view (last photo) is from the reservoir itself and can be noted how low it is despite the amount of rain up here. See Pip for alternative view Enjoy full screen

Ben Lawers Dam

As seen from the waterside. Also called 'Lochan na Lairige Dam' See next photo for full description.

HWW~ I'll be dammed!

22 May 2024 26 32 186
A puzzle at first sight here. It is actually the back wall and buttresses of the Lochan na Lairige Dam here near Loch Tay in the Scottish central Highlands.. As I walked towards these massive archways I could not tell until stood underneath whether the top inside was lit up by a light through a gap to the top of the dam or was it simply an optical illusion of difference in the rock colouration. HWW, enjoy the week. ps A more complete photo of this to come!

HBM ~ By the River Lochay

20 May 2024 20 24 212
A rather nice spot on the River Lochay on the outskirts of Killin as we ponder our next walk. This is one of the feeder rivers to Loch Tay. I liked the reflections here on this calm water. HBM, enjoy the week.

Loch Tay, Scottish Central Highlands

19 May 2024 17 12 227
This Loch, only a few hundred metres from our holiday cabin in Killin seemed a wild, dark and lonely Loch. It is 14.5 miles (23.4km) long and typically 1 to 1.5 miles wide (1.6-2.4km) and is quite deep at 490ft (150mts) at its deepest. It is overlooked on one side by Ben Lawers with its six sister Monro’s (on our left side here). It's hard to believe that ancient settlers once lived on Loch Tay, inhabiting artificially created islands known as crannogs. We did attempt to drive the length along its wilder southern road (on our right) but bad weather defeated us at ¾ of its length before a hasty retreat. (Narrow single track roads with many blind summits in torrential rain is no fun!) Enjoy full screen

Killin and the Falls of Dochart

18 May 2024 19 17 203
Killin and the Falls of Dochart Taken from the river towards the Bridge of Dochard in the village of Killin. A very popular spot as witnessed by the many tourist busses that stop here.

HFF ~ Meall Liath from Loch Tay

17 May 2024 28 35 194
Our first walk of our new Scottish holiday at the village of Killin in Perthshire starts with some fine weather. We are walking along the River Dochard here and beyond the fence we think we are seeing Meall Liath although it might be part of Beinn Ghlas. Have a good weekend.

Killin Water Mill

14 May 2024 24 21 151
Situated just at the corner of our holiday cottage for a week, this was a most interesting sight to see and experience. Not only does the wheel work on certain days but one can visit the inside and see the workings too. It was originally called St Fillan’s Mill and built around 1840. It had fallen into disrepair and refurbished in 1989 and then again in 2013. It is now a folklore centre. See Pips of the actual wheel Enjoy full screen
