Winters feed

04 Feb 2025 33 31 203
These sheep may have a fine view over to the city of Manchester but there are more important things in life. Fortunately the farmer has seen to that by providing them some fresh feed. Taken on a recent ramble around the hills of Oldham. Enjoy full screen.

Thoughts of Summer

As we experience the fifth day of rainy fog I cannot but help thinking about our summer days of July here near Middleham in Yorkshire. Enjoy the day

Seen just south of the village of Plockton. Best full screen Enjoy the day.

Late Summer in the Dales

07 Feb 2024 36 32 230
We see here a very typical day in the Yorkshire Dales, displaying a combination of storm and sun weather near the village of Hellifield. As it’s the Dales, of course there are miles of dry-stone walls and sheep in the fields. The wonderful tree to our left is a sheer bonus as is the light. HWW, have a great day

A winter ramble

12 Jan 2024 47 57 307
Dec 21 2010 As Winter took hold of this spot just to the north of Pendle Hill one can see and understand the real beauty of snow and light. Taken thirteen years ago whilst visiting a nearby hostelry for a birthday celebration. It was one of our coldest days for many years at -8C in the middle of the day but this short walk to what to us was a familiar spot was well worth the frosty fingers. Enjoy full screen Have a good weekend

It’s nice being a farmer

04 Oct 2023 23 27 193
As we hike back to the car from the Bearded Lake we pass near the bottom farm just in time to see the farmer rounding up his sheep. No doubt a sheep-dog was also nearby. HWW, have a great day.

HWW ~ Welsh grazing sheep

09 Aug 2023 29 27 184
Green fields and dry-stone walls make this a very British scene as the sheep graze and observe a stranger on this high hill. Taken near Dolgelleu in mid Wales. HWW, have a great day.

Spring joys

10 Apr 2023 18 9 182
Spring is such a delightful time for nature. Its when there is new life everywhere. Here we see two very young lambs getting to know each other better but the chances are that they are siblings anyway. Taken on the River Usk, Abergavenny. This is a familiar sight to many British people as much of our rural countryside still have sheep roaming around but as time goes on I am afraid each year there are less farm animals, as farmers find they are uneconomical and our open spaces gets smaller and less healthy. Best full screen. Have a good day and week. Herb ps sheep feature heavily on our Easter greeting cards.

A Lancashire Sunset

21 Feb 2023 31 27 206
As we travel the short distance back from Pendle Hill to our holiday cottage in Grindleton, the sun sinks quickly even at this early hour. After a warmer day than average, the promised mist begins to form and we spot a place to capture the moment. This is sheep country and there are many pregnant mothers around as well as new born lambs. The trees here in these conditions give the whole scene a water-colour painting look. Enjoy full screen

Nature at its best

16 Feb 2023 18 23 182
A visit to Sabden village in Lancashire took us on to Churn Clough Reservoir. On climbing the hill to the reservoir we were blessed by this sight. Enjoy full screen

She thinks we cannot see her, surrounded by ferns and with her camouflage on but..........perhaps its simply her necklace!

Sheep can be so curious. Seen on our round walk from Glasson Dock. Have a great weekend. Herb

Round-up time

31 Jul 2021 23 19 195
Its sheep round up time as the sun starts to set here, but whether these are simply going to the next field or to market I cannot say. Just out of vision is a sheep dog and a farmer sat on a quad-bike. Enjoy full screen.

Tree framed sheep

02 Jul 2021 37 62 299
One from last year’s Lake District trip to Ennerdale Bridge. This hill caught my attention with these trees, especially the one on the right. The sheep also thought that shape was a bit strange for a tree. Enjoy full size and have a great week. Ps –and no wise-cracks about there only being two framed sheep :)

Sheep shall safely graze

28 Feb 2021 31 26 339
I finish this week’s photos as I started this series of winter scenes, with another sheep photo. These sheep have not realised there is a nice pile of hay for them just a few hundred metres away. For me, the warm light glistening on the top coats as well as getting the attention of this close sheep makes the picture. The sun is to get a little lower and me a little higher on this hill before its back to a nice warm house and meal. I hope you have enjoyed this mini-series of my winters in Oldham Sheep shall safely graze music: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeFqHXdXQyw Enjoy full screen.

Winter feeding time

15 Feb 2021 40 31 346
After uploading a photo of sheep in sun-setting light for last weeks HFF, I have decided to share more of my local Winter Snow scenes with you here. Here we are looking down onto the Dovestones area Binn Green carpark with one of the three reservoirs in view As a back-drop we have of course the western Pennine range, known here as the Saddleworth Moors. Hear Shaun the Sheep here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWhLi1ef360 Enjoy full screen.

The lengthening Winter’s day

12 Feb 2021 57 75 398
Just minutes before sunset and it’s very cold here in Saddleworth, just a short distance from my home. Behind me is a pile of winter feed for these sheep and I think the sheep thinks I might be the friendly farmer as it comes closer. As can be seen, we are having flurries of snow as I snap the scene. To the left is a walled public lane that is normally very wet and muddy but it is well frozen today so it crunches underfoot. I take the route right and climb the steep way almost to the top of the hill before time, weather and fitness gets in the way. And, yes, the days are at last getting a bit longer day by day. HFF and have a great safe weekend. Best seen large of course!

Life goes on!

It may be cold but at least its dry, these sheep may be thinking. We see here a scene taken again, only 30 minutes walk from my front door. The background tree and fences are favourite past photo subjects for me. As I took this, some parts of our country were having vey heavy snowfalls. Enjoy and keep safe. Herb
