A Kettleness view

21 Oct 2020 30 17 328
A look at this characteristic headland between Whitby and Runswick Bay that housed quarries in the 18th century. The quarries used to be for mining ‘alum’ and ‘jet’, that eventually caused most of the high village to slip into the sea, as a result of severe instability in 1829. There were no casualties as the slide was slow. The new settlement was relocated slightly further inland. On the high headland itself there used to be a Roman Signal station. Enjoy full screen.

Runswick Bay at low tide

19 Oct 2020 17 14 256
Another village of character on this North Yorkshire coast as seen from the cliff path on its southern flank. We have walked from the village to here over the sands and climbed a lot of steps to this point. Our destinations is Sandsend village. We have a nine mile round walk here. Enjoy full size.

Its a dog's life

10 Oct 2020 22 22 328
Fun at the seaside for these dogs enjoying themselves in the sea. We are at Runswick Bay on the north Yorkshire coast and all these dogs belonged to one couple. They often ran further into the deeper water. I know that Labradors love water and no doubt that feeling is infections to the other two dogs also. Enjoy full screen

Grounded!

A first look at Runswick Bay, another North Yorkshire coastal village. Here we are on the front with the old Lifeboat Station now housing the locally subscribed Rescue Boat. No doubt the canoes and such like are operated by and for the local community youth. I suspect now though that much of this is curtailed in our present C19 safety conditions. "Runswick Bay Lifeboat Station was a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat station located in Runswick Bay in North Yorkshire, England. The station was opened in 1866, with a sister station opening at Staithes nine years later. Staithes Lifeboat Station was closed in 1922, and barring another short period of operation at Staithes, Runswick Bay was a mainstay of lifeboat operations on the Yorkshire coast until 1978, when Runswick Bay was closed and Staithes was re-activated. The local population re-started a lifeboat in Runswick Bay in the early 1980s and this now functions as the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat (RBRB), which operates in conjunction with all rescue services on the coast and is part of the HM Coastguards' emergency activation process in the area" WiKi

The Solway Firth

13 Sep 2020 21 15 228
My last photo from this high Corpse Road before dropping back down to Loweswater. The Nearest shores being about 18km (11m) from where I am standing. The far shores are actually the counties of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. As can be seen here, great areas of our extensive coast are now filled with windfarms. Good for the planet maybe but not the most natural things on the horizons. “The Solway Firth is a firth that forms part of the border between England and Scotland, between Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway. It stretches from St Bees Head, just south of Whitehaven in Cumbria, to the Mull of Galloway, on the western end of Dumfries and Galloway. The Isle of Man is also very near to the firth.” Wikipedia Enjoy full screen

The Wonders of Mallorca: Serra de Tramuntana

11 Aug 2020 31 15 338
This mountain range described as the northern backbone of Mallorca runs from the southwest to the northeast. We see here, of course the Mediterranean sea looking north to the Spanish mainland and Barcelona some 180km away and behind to the right is Puig Major the highest mountain of this area. Our road continues ahead along this coast now toward the famous Cap de Formentor lighthouse and then on to Pollença. Enjoy this monochrome rendition in full screen.

A promenade fence

24 Jul 2020 54 67 450
Taken a few years back now, this splendid iron fence adorns the promenade of our Yorkshire coastal town of Filey. Over the years countless layers of white paint has been added onto this, to counter the constant salt spray, but as you can see the rust still prevails giving it an attractive look too. The top rail is in fact painted a very similar but darker rich ochre colour. In the distance one can see the headland of the famous Filey Brig. PiP shows Filey itself. HFF, enjoy the weekend.

Filey Town at Easter

A long view into this Yorkshire holiday resort. Demonstrating that a day at the seaside is always worth a paddle even in such cool dull weather.

Evening calls!

A beautifully lit scene of the cliffs near Seaford showing these Kittiwakes that have been nesting here. Originally in my Panoramio gallery of 2009 Enjoy full screen on black.

You just can’t beat a good sunset!

21 May 2020 41 43 370
Our home lock-down does not enable me to get many good sunsets at the moment. So here is a splendid evenings shooting at Balnakeil Bay in the very North of Scotland from 2014. This was taken around 22:00 but I stood snapping for another hour getting the glorious after-effect lighting. As I took this, I was accompanied by about another dozen photographers all shooting the same scene, some doing long time exposures. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this. Enjoy full screen

A vision of St Brides

A very enjoyable moment here at St Brides in Wales. A rare moment of sun and blue skies in this mid-summer trip.

The colours of the Yorkshire coast

30 Apr 2020 24 20 295
Another retro look here, in these days of very limited outings and travel that most of us here in Britain are adhering to. This time just outside the seaside-town of Filey, East Yorkshire. Just around the corner from its famous narrow peninsula into the sea named Filey Brig. Taken in April 2012 Enjoy large.

Torrent de Pareis and its bathers.

31 Oct 2014 2 3 382
The bathers are almost lost in the grandeur of this scene from the sea. Notice the steady stream of tourist going to and from this idyllic spot on the bottom right.

Coastal Cyprus

The coast around Protaras is generally very tranquil but after a storm out to sea we can see here that it is not always safe to take a dip.
