Skinningrove

01 May 2021 29 27 278
Another village on our North Yorkshire coast with a lot of history. Here we see the coastal edge of the village with reminders of its fishing heritage. Skinningrove was once just an agricultural and fishing economy and then in 1848 it experienced an industrial boom with local ironstone working. A railway was built in 1865 and iron smelting stated in 1874. A jetty was built in 1880 to allow ships to take away the cargoes. Mining continued until 1958 and the iron production finally finished in the 1970’s. The Pip shows the beach from both sides of the jetty onto Cattersty Sands (with the red lifebelt) , known as a hidden gem. Enjoy full screen.

A very quiet promenade walk on this Easterly resort. Even though the weather was cold, a couple still take time for a nice sit down. Enjoy full size and have a great week.

A postcard from Whitby

07 Dec 2020 33 32 305
The charming, workaday, historic seaside town of Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast is the subject of today’s postcard. We are looking down from the high corner of the new town towards the river entrance, old town and the famous Whitby Abbey. Shooting directly into bright sunlight makes this a difficult shot but allows it a different feel to the usual views one sees from here. Out of sight, to the left sits the very distinctive jetty and below me to the right is the fish quays and market. Standing behind me is a statue to the town’s famous son, Captain James Cook. (See PiP) and adjacent photo. ‘James Cook (1728-1779) was born in the village of Marton near Middlesbrough and later apprenticed to a draper in the small fishing harbour of Staithes (11 miles north of Whitby). Later he moved to Whitby and became a trainee with a local shipping firm. Later, he joined the Royal Navy and was rapidly promoted to a command. It is as Captain Cook that the world still knows him – the man who charted the coast of New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia and who was one of the greatest surveyors as well as one of the finest sailors and explorers of all time. He learned his craft in Whitby vessels trading to the Baltic and two of the vessels he used on his long and perilous voyages – ‘Resolution’ and ‘Endeavour’ were built in Whitby.’ - www.visitwhitby.com Full screen essential.

Old Nab

Just before reaching Staithes from the south, one passes this interesting headland quaintly called 'Old Nab' . The bay below is called 'Jet Wyke' where many ancient fossils can be found. If you look closely, you can just see a tent erected at its foot, quite an enterprise as during the past four or five days there has been a fierce storm raging along this coast. Its still windy today but it will soon calm down. Enjoy full screen.

The English North-East coast in September

Another mini-holiday takes us to the North Yorkshire coast for a week of basking sunshine! Instead though, we get views and weather like this but it has its compensations, in dramatic photos and splendid airy cliff-top walks. Here we are just north of Port Mulgrave on our way to the old village of Staiths. PiP Enjoy full size.

Goth invasion at Whitby.

For one week (at least) a year, the Yorkshire town of Whitby is invaded by Goths. Mainly because much of the book: Dracula, was based there. This character standing in the cemetery by Whitby Abbey has a certain appeal, don't you think!!!!

A promenade fence

24 Jul 2020 54 67 458
Taken a few years back now, this splendid iron fence adorns the promenade of our Yorkshire coastal town of Filey. Over the years countless layers of white paint has been added onto this, to counter the constant salt spray, but as you can see the rust still prevails giving it an attractive look too. The top rail is in fact painted a very similar but darker rich ochre colour. In the distance one can see the headland of the famous Filey Brig. PiP shows Filey itself. HFF, enjoy the weekend.

Filey Town at Easter

A long view into this Yorkshire holiday resort. Demonstrating that a day at the seaside is always worth a paddle even in such cool dull weather.

The colours of the Yorkshire coast

30 Apr 2020 24 20 299
Another retro look here, in these days of very limited outings and travel that most of us here in Britain are adhering to. This time just outside the seaside-town of Filey, East Yorkshire. Just around the corner from its famous narrow peninsula into the sea named Filey Brig. Taken in April 2012 Enjoy large.
