Woodpecker fence

25 Sep 2020 39 59 356
Our friendly Greater Spotted Woodpecker visitor in the garden of our rented holiday cottage near Ennerdale in the Lake District. He came every day to feed from the hanging seed feeder and between feeding it would rest and keep watch on this gate. See PiPs for more. In the second PiP, the bird is simply scratching itself on the wooden beam. It is not asleep nor as some may fear, dead! Enjoy full screen

Sparrow on fence

“Mummy, it’s awfully high up here!” Seen from my house window, looking down on our panel fence. Behind, is a pine tree that our sparrows like to nest in. There seems to be at least three of these young fledglings around, which considering the harassment that the sparrow family get from the many magpies, is very good. HFF, enjoy your weekend

Mr Black pays a visit.

Mr Black pays a visit. We are very fortunate that we have a few families of blackbirds (Turdus merula) nesting and feeding around our gardens here at home. This is the adult male resting on our side fence, keeping an eye open for the naughty magpies looking for Mr Black’s nest. Now not only does he look an attractive bird with his bright yellow beak and eye ring but his song is to die for. He and his friends often roost on the very tops of our tall conifers and sing to each other at their heart content, especially at dawn and dusk. A few days before snapping this I did the rare thing of recording his song with my phone and I have uploaded that for your pleasure here in my Ipernity Docs section. Enjoy full screen with my sound clip running.

A beautifully lit scene of the cliffs near Seaford showing these Kittiwakes that have been nesting here. Originally in my Panoramio gallery of 2009 Enjoy full screen on black.

Herbs garden birds: Green finch on drinking founta…

28 Apr 2020 47 51 331
Another look at one of our garden bird visitors. This time taking a drink from the newly waterproofed dry fountain bowl in our garden. This one I am quite sure is an adult male. Scientific name: Chloris chloris. ~ The fountain - a relic from our last house which had a fish pond with this working wedding present fountain, the centre of attraction. We had Koi and such-like as well as a visiting heron :) Enjoy full screen.

Our robin takes notice before he drinks.

Another shot in our garden to the bird bath within our dry-fountain. In practice, we have two robins here in the garden and I believe this one has a nest within the ivy, honysuckle and clematis trellis, shared with a blackbirds nest too. Technically this is a 'European Robin' with the scientific name: Erithacus rubecula Nice full screen

The Storks of Silves.

Silves in Portugal is the setting for this pair of Storks, famously returning as a pair, year after year to rebuild their nest and raise young. Hope you enjoy this silhouette.

A Scottish Puffin

This beautiful little bird, a resident of Northern Scotland, was one of a trio seen at Duncansby Head, Britain's most North Easterly point.

Bird of the day: Great Tit

11 Apr 2020 29 29 218
As Easter weekend is upon us and Spring burst forth, our garden birds are in ecstasy. This Great Tit (Parus major) stood on one of our stone moles, was dancing up and down whilst flapping its wings rapidly, not to fly but clearly to impress. Ah, just found out that my wife saw this and another doing what the birds and bees do naturally, just moments before it landed on here. Enjoy too, the more frontal pose in the PiP. As usual, nice full size.

Lets have a party

Another look at our garden house sparrows (Passer domesticus) enjoying themselves sat on the rim of our bird-bath. Filled with water they can bathe or drink as they like. The old fountain is no longer connected up to a water source so I have to manually fill the reservoir every few days. See Pip over left bird for another view. Nice full screen
