Tarbet pier, Loch Lomond

A fenced view down and onto the wooden pier here. This is the home of ‘Cruise Loch Lomond’ and a very busy spot it is in summer. No fences on the lower parts so people have to be very careful near the edges. It has been extensively repaired and renewed over the past few years.
Enjoy the weekend.
Old Arrochar Pier

On the very northern tip of Loch Long, Arrochar has always been a popular stop-off-point both for road traffic and sail. One of the first sets of sailors were in fact Viking invaders sailing up the length of Loch Long (20miles) from the sea, then transporting their long-boats the small distance overland to Tarbet on Loch Lomond towards Glasgow plundering the lakeside villages. Later it was also a very popular place for steam ship tours that plied the Clyde and Loch Long as part of the’ Three Lochs’ tour. It was that traffic that brought about this pier built in 1850 to service those steamers as part of what was also called the Arrachar Route. Steamers would come here from such places as Rothersay (Bute), Dunoon and Gourock. In 1968 traffic was down to three times a week mainly serviced by ‘Waverley’. Today it is all a distant memory with only the odd pleasure craft seen up here with the roar of road traffic across the water, heading for 'The Rest and be Thankful’ pass.
We see across the loch, part of the ‘Arrochar Alps’ towards Crianlarich. The distinctive toothed peak is known as ‘The Cobbler’.

Another look at Loch Lomond, as we can never get enough of this magnificent stretch of water. Looking south in the direction of Glasgow from about two thirds of the loch length of 39km (24miles) up. From here one can go further north or west. The western road takes us through the village of Arrochar and the mighty Loch Long on to Inveraray and the west coast - this is our direction. The northern route takes one to Crianlarich and Fort William via Glencoe.

Another trip down memory lane. We are here on the old pier of Stranraer in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The date is May 2017 and we were lucky with the weather whilst taking a potter around this once very busy place with its fishing and ferry harbour.
In a short time we will pass through here again and I wonder, seeing this, whether that blue paint will look just as fresh and attractive.
Enjoy full screen and have a great week.
Weston-Super-Mare – The Grand Pier

Another week by the sea takes me for a night to Somerset’s Weston-S-Mare’s promenade in rather dodgy weather. Here we see its famous Grand Pier which for us was unfortunately closed. Originally built in 1905 it was damaged by fire in 2008 and its superstructure repaired and re-opened in 2010.
Of course for me, I am attracted by the stormy light here and some minutes later had to run for cover.

A portrait of Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Saltburn, a seaside resort on our East coast just south of Redcar. Today it is a place where tourist flock in warm weather to sit on its beautiful beach, walk the long pier and also ride the popular Victorian cliff lift on its 120 feet ascent/decent (see PiP). There is even a very nice Italian garden here but I shall leave it up to the visitors to investigate that. Here we see the front promenade with the lift from the far end of the pier and showing parts of the main town above. Another pip shows the opposite end of the pier that was entered in our HFF group some weeks back.

Back to last years Yorkshire coast week and we are here in Saltburn-by-the-sea. A charming Victorian town just south of the industrial town of Redcar and north of Whitby. This was a cold, miserable day as we get quite a lot of on this coast but it was nice to stroll up and down this lovely pier.

A Whitby East pier view

Looking across the harbour to the two piers. In front we have the old section of the East pier, which like on the west pier in the background, has many benches for people to rest and picnic. An ideal spot, especially in good warm weather.
Full screen essential.
HBM to all, have a great week.
Whitby and its piers

Lots of fences here to satisfy the most ardent Happy Fence Friday fan :)
Whitby harbour is protected by a pair of piers set in a claw-like shape by which the River Esk escapes into the North Sea.
The two piers in Whitby have been in existence since before the 1500's. By 1540, the two oak piers (east and west) were replaced partially, with stonework (in the reign of King Charles 1), with further work around the 1600’s. Both piers were rebuilt in 1735, each measuring approximately 183m, but by 1814 the west pier was further extended to reach a length of 309m. In 1905, both the piers had new pier ends built on, each of a length of 152m. In Feb 2020 a new footbridge was constructed on the east pier to link the main pier to its the wooden extension. (Seen on here in white.)

A view towards the sea on this stone walkway. The oak extension is to the left, ending with the red topped beacon you can just see here. In front of us is also the East Pier with its lighthouse and its new wooden trestle extension.

A view of this iconic west pier built in two halves, one in stone and the other oak. We also see its beacons and lighthouse. A right pier also exist and that is also glimpsed here holding the red topped beacon tower and the smaller right hand lighthouse.
The west pier lighthouse was built in 1831, and is a stone 83 feet column tower with a lantern on top. This light still displays a green light when shipping is expected. A newer lighthouse beacon stands at the end of this pier, a wooden framework tower on 'legs' built in 1914. Only the older west pier lighthouse is open to the public, but on a limited number of days per year.

A pier of Ayia Napa

Between Ayia Nappa and its Nissi Beach lie a few small coves and bays. Here at one of them sits this old pier. In Summer this would be crowded of course.
