HWW ~ The River Ure near Bolton Hall

26 Feb 2025 18 38 122
Another look at the Yorkshire Dales area around Bolton Hall. A view from the lovely bridge over the river here that at one time might have been the main carriage track to the hall. Now only the odd walker and maybe tractor goes over it. The River Ure in North Yorkshire, England, is about 74 miles long from its source to the point where it becomes the River Ouse. It is the principal river of Wensleydale, which is the only major dale now named after a village rather than its river. See PiP’s for alternative views. Enjoy the day.

HBM ~ A Shawl bench

Another look from the Shawl at Leyburn. A big wide valley with quite a lot to look at. This bench was very popular in the warm sun as we passed it again later. HBM, enjoy the week.

HWW ~ The walls of Reeth.

Another day on our Yorkshire Dales week at Leyburn brings us to the village of Reeth. A charming enough village in itself but surrounded by wonderful rolling hills full of old barns, dry-stone walls and sheep. Here is just one of the many small scenes that took my fancy. Enjoy the week.

A manor view

19 Nov 2024 13 16 125
A look towards Bolton Hall showing the top of the bridge across the River Ure and the old gate pillars. This track would have been one of the main private roads to the house as the bigger public road was only a hundred meters away behind me. Try to imagine an old coach and horses full of gents and ladies in period clothing visiting for a summer gala dance on here. (PiP) HWW, enjoy the day. Best full screen

HFF ~ Bolton Hall

A great place to reside no doubt, this great house built in the late 17th century and rebuilt after a fire in 1902 was and still is the residence of the Bolton Family (both Dukes & Barons). It is some 5km west of Leyburn in the Yorkshire Dales. The estate includes the historical Bolton castle. See the PiP for a snap of a set of its country gates. Nice full screen Have a good weekend.

HBM~ Middleham Castle walk

A round walk from Middleham Castle in Yorkshire brings us alongside this small lake. A great please for us to rest a moment. HBM, enjoy the day.

HBM ~The bench nobody wants

16 Sep 2024 20 32 153
Once a proud bench with great views now it’s forlorn as the views disappear under a canopy of fast growing trees. Our path on the Shawl near Leyburn runs alongside this and one might have thought that somebody or some organisation would turn it around and give it a coat of varnish, but no… always a new crafted one somewhere to take its place instead. HBM, enjoy the week.

HBM~ Leyburn Station

09 Sep 2024 16 30 168
A look at this railway station here in the Yorkshire Dales just some minutes before it was to be crowded with people who were to board this train. This is one of our Class 143 DMU’s known as a Pacer. I should say that this is actually the Wensleydale Railway, and operates heritage diesel train services between Scruton and Leyburn. The PiP shows the station before the train arrival. HBM, enjoy the week.

A Shawl walk

HWW ~ Another Dales wall

The countryside of Britain has been completely domesticated my man over the millenniums. Here we see agricultural land with a dry-stone boundary wall. Seen near Leyburn. HWW, enjoy the day

Along the way

A walk in the country can give us many things that reach our senses. Here we have a touch of summer with this old broken wall and a dead tree. The foxgloves gives us some colours to concentrate on but I am afraid you don’t have the sounds and smells to go with this scene. Sorry! Best full screen

HBM~ Shawl walk bench

12 Aug 2024 18 20 146
Just a short time back, we took a trip to a Yorkshire Dales town called Leyburn. Only yards from its town centre was the start of a delightful walk called ‘The Shawl walk’. So called because near the far end of it, sits an impressive castle that once held Mary Queen of Scots prisoner. It is said that she made an escape attempt along the shawls upper edge (The shawl being a long steep valley) and lost her shawl en-route leading to her re-capture. This carved bench was seen along the bottom path of our round walk here. PiP Enjoy full screen. HBM, enjoy the week.

The barns and lines of Wensleydale

04 Aug 2024 16 10 103
Back from a week at Leyburn in North west Yorkshire we see here a scene from near The Shawl at Leyburn. A sign of things to come as this is barn and drystone wall country. A complete change for us is walking in summer outfits as it is hot and bright. Enjoy full screen.
