The September equinox is the moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading southward. Because of differences between the calendar year and the tropical year, the September equinox may occur from September 21 to 24. The equinox may be taken to mark the end of astronomical summer and the beginning of astronomical autumn (autumnal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere. Meteorological autumn begins on the first day of September.
Earth balls have indeed been common in Ruyton XI Towns woodlands this year. Eventually, when fully mature, the top of the earthball cracks open and allows the wind and rain to disperse its precious content, its spores.
These are one of the few species in the woods that will make you very ill if eaten.
We in the north are now officially in autumn.
We are away for a few days. Enjoy the weekend and next week.

Our challenge for today was to find some very small fungi that grow in fallen pine cones. There is a mixed woodland near where we live with numerous pines, redwoods and spruce as well as broad-leaved trees' so off we went. We only found 2 in the whole of the woodland, both growing on Scots pine cones; but we thoroughly enjoyed the 3 mile walk and the thorough search.

Today's Sunday Challenge is: MUSHROOMS/FUNGI
We had a very wet, mild and windy December 2021, and many trees and branches were blown down. January 2022 is having a late fungal fest, The main photo was taken this week at Attingham Park. Of the two PiPs, they were both taken the previous week, one at Attingham and the other in Ruyton. The yellow fungus is Tremella mesenterica, the Yellow Brain Fungus, and is mainly seen in winter, when it appears on fallen branches of deciduous trees.

Stem
White/off white/cream, often very slightly mottled grey to brown with a kind of snakeskin effect. Coming from a bulb a little like the amanitas, strong and up to 30 cm almost always with the skirt still on nearly 2/3 of the way up the stem. Hollow on cutting and often very fibrous.

My favourite sort of morning, low sun and thick frost. These tiny frosted fungi were found on a cut tree stump, which can be seem in PiP 1 if you look closely.
PiP 2 shows a close-up of the larger fungus.
PiP 3 is an ice puddle.
