Monsaraz, Igreja N-S- da Lagoa

The primitive gothic church was built in the second half of the 13th century, and its oldest reference dates back to the time of King Dinis.
Due to the black plague that ravaged the region, the original church disappeared during the reign of King João I, giving rise to the construction of a new Parish Church, since the small size of the building did not allow for the burial of the local population.
The current parish church, built by the architect Pêro Gomes, dates from the 16th century, based on the Renaissance style, with three naves supported by four Tuscan columns, where the regional schist predominates.
The pediment is decorated with a panel of tiles and topped by a Cross of the Order of Christ, representing Our Lady of the Conception. The high altar, made of gilded woodcarvings, has two wooden sculptures representing St. Augustine and St. Monica. The interior is decorated with artistic decorations from the 17th and 18th centuries and has 8 side chapels.
