Beautiful...and I like this unusual perspective. Let's hope that this almond tree will grow into a sturdy and strong tree and supply us with lots of almonds. I like them a lot :-)

A weird but true story...when my parents and I traveled to Croatia (Yugoslavia back then) for the first time in 1965, we brought back boatloads of almonds. Back home, I generously shared them with my friends who lived in the same apartment building. We were downstairs in the backyard and hammering away with rocks at the almond shells (can you imagine parents nowadays allowing their 6-year old kids to do that)?? Anyway, an elderly neighbor came along, and she was terribly shocked (not at us treating almonds with rocks!!), but she was afraid we'd eat them (that was the idea, of course!) and warned us not to as they were highly poisonous!! I told her that I had eaten them all the time on my vacation in Yugoslavia and I was still alive. She was in total disbelief because she thought they were peach pits as she had never seen almonds in their shells before :-)))

I had the same experience with elderberries here in the French hinterland: I always make jam of them, together with blackberries. One day my neighbor saw me when I picked them up, she warned me that they were poisonous! When I assured her the opposite, she didn't believe me !!

Different cultures… and maybe too because of amara variety which contains poison ( cyanure). If you eat two or rhree no harm done but 20 can make you really sick and 40 can kill you…
Hope you enjoyed the ones you had as kid, opening them is part of the fun.

You should have given her a bottle of elderberry wine and Elton John's song to accompany it. Perhaps she'd have believed you then ;-))

That's true and I've heard of that. But we assured her that those almonds were the sweet type. The funny thing is that she didn't even seem to know what almonds were, she insisted they were peach pits (those might as well be poisonous, I don't know as I've never tried any, just the peaches themselves) ;-)

Better not, their indeed poisonous...

Yes, and that's why we ate almonds instead ;-))
