Gotcha'. on that Colin,.. As a youth , 1961 !.. I travelled by rail from Sheffield to Manchester and I knew the route well,. .. it looks now like the old line is surfaced for recreation.. but the tunnel shows 3 miles - which seems a heck of a long way ? // Dj.

Yes the Longdendale Trail (part of the Trans-Pennine trail) is all along the old track bed. I never did the journey but did see trains on the line in the last years of use

Thanks Colin,. I looked at the map,. and it appears that the 'Longdendale' trail doesn't go through the full length of the Woodhead tunnel,.. which I thought would too much of a distance for people to be sealed off from the outside world,. the 'Pennine trail' appears to go 'up and over' rather than through the tunnel. Still a good thing to do though, if one has the stamina'.. // Cheers', from Dj.
