Guess more or less the same around the world decades ago, no idea how classrooms look now!

The old desk is really quite beautiful Trudy. From memory I think, apart from the labs all our desks were single and the wood not nearly as nice as this. I wonder if the children of today even use books to write in as it is probably all done on computers now. I find that thought quite sad.

Originelle Schulbank! Auf solch einer habe ich auch noch gesessen. Wir hatten noch richtige Füller ohne Patronen. Oben in der Mitte des Tisches ist die Vertiefung für das Tintenfass. Unsere Tische waren voller Tintenflecke und unsere Finger waren immer blau.

When I was in second grade (and maybe fourth, too) we had double desks like this. There were dozens of them in the classroom.

I remember sitting at a desk similar to this but not in such good condition. The surface was scratched and ink stained. We practised writing in the jotters (exercise books), and were very quiet students. Our writing was inter-spaced with ink blots. But I loved school in the 40s and early 50s.
