When I was in second grade (and maybe fourth, too) we had double desks like this. There were dozens of them in the classroom.

I remember sitting at a desk similar to this but not in such good condition. The surface was scratched and ink stained. We practised writing in the jotters (exercise books), and were very quiet students. Our writing was inter-spaced with ink blots. But I loved school in the 40s and early 50s.
