I saw the dreadful bushfires in the news on German television yesterday and I am terrified!
My thoughts are with all the people who have lost their homes and the relatives of those who have lost their lives and also with the brave fire fighters, of course.

Saw it on TV ! And I hope for some rain for you !!!

Thoughts are with anyone in danger, are these fires more common than in the past George?

There often are fires at this time of year, Roger, but these are totally unprecedented in their extent (over 1 million hectares in NSW alone) and the areas they are reaching. There is a massive drought across eastern Australia which has resulted in even rainforest (normally too wet and humid to burn) going up. The greater concern is that the outlook remains dry and summer is yet to begin.

That is so sad and worrying George one assumes climate change is playing a part in this.

A real reminder of these firemen (firewomen) about there task. I too watch with horror those flames getting ever closer to your capital city. Today, I hear it is hotter than ever with stronger winds too.

Thank you, Herb. We've had something of a respite for now, though further north in Queensland there are fires in areas they've never been previously. It could be a long summer!

We're not so bad at the moment in WA; the heat's not begun in earnest yet (high 30s at present; 40s this weekend, but no bad winds). Still, between reading the news of NSW, Queensland and SA, I find I'm obsessively checking the DFES site for our route to the coast through the hills from the Wheatbelt. It's a bugger, innit.

Fireys are supermen and superwomen; volunteer fireys doubly so.

Many thanks, John. Fortunately we've been clear in my area so far, but things are bad further north (see my note to Herb). I also find myself looking at the RFS site for regular updates. Some of those fireys certainly deserve medals, they've been at it so hard for so long.

Deepest sympathies, George. We can certainly relate here--it's been another bad fire season in California, with thousands of acres and dozens of homes lost. Late fall has become the worst fire season (tho it lasts all year)--the vegetation is maximally dry, before the winter rains, and strong katabatic winds blow out to the Pacific, driven by cold air masses inland. The Santa Ana winds of SoCal are just one example.

As others have said, we have seen the devastating bush fires on TV. To see them affecting some cities like Sydney, must be quite frightening. I hope they are soon under control. My best wishes.
