two winged beasts with curly tails fight under the feet of the abbot's effigy on this flemish brass of abbot de la mare, who died in 1397. the brass is earlier, say 1360, as prelates rarely had offspring or a will to pay for tombs and generally provided for themselves during their lifetimes.
