all along the south walk of the cloister are these columns buried in the wall: they date from c.1170, and are from the arcade between the nave of the nuns' church and its north aisle. this aisle was pulled down when bishop alcock founded his college on the site in 1497, in order to enlarge his cloister, and the arcade remains in the wall. the west end of the nave was demolished at the same time
