maldon moot hall, essex

maldon moot hall, essex
superb brickwork of c.1420 inside the stair turret of the tower built by the d'arcy family as part of their townhouse. this brick is red, unlike earlier yellow essex bricks, and this also shows much high levels of skill, both in the formation and the laying of the bricks. the recessed handrail, the newel post, and the tumbled vault must all be the work of real experts, most probably from flanders given maldon's links through its port. the house became a moot hall in the c16.
