peterborough cathedral devils

one of the best carvings in the cathedral is below knee height as you enter, and must be missed by many. it is the carving at the base of the central column of the main door, dates from c.1190 and shows several devils tormenting a man held upside down. it is made of either purbeck or alwalton marble, and has long been believed to be of simon magus .
