westminster cathedral, london

the roman catholic cathedral was built in 1895-1903 to the designs of john francis bentley in a venetian byzantine style. there is a strong contrast between the multitudinous colours of the marble and mosaic clad lower levels and the stark dark brick above, reminiscent of ruined roman thermae, or broad street station before the change.
