It would be nice to hear you recite the poem Joe. I don't think I have the right accent! I cannot quite see when he died, so looked it up, and sadly I read, he had a very short life! Cheers, Rosa.

Yes, he died very young, Rosa. He was 24. He was a heavy drinker and sustained a brain injury on falling down a stone staircase. He was admitted to the Darien House Hospital, where he died.

I have a book of his poems. My favourite is Auld Reikie.

When you read Auld Reikie, Rosa, you can see why Burns said Fergusson was "by far my elder brother in the muse". When Burns wrote:

"When chapmen billies leave the street,
And drouthy neibors, neibors meet,
As market days are wearing late,
An' folk begin to tak the gate;
While we sit bousing at the nappy,
And getting fou and unco happy,"

I am sure he must have been influenced by Fergusson's rhyming couplet:

"Whare couthy chiels at e'ening meet
Their bizzing craigs and mous to weet;"
