Contribution for The Sunday Challenge #458: Abstract Photography

Before uploading my contribution, I read what Ghislaine wrote on her contribution description. That made me to think (again) what is abstract. I had already taken and edited my shot, based on my own subconscious understanding on this genre. But I started to think why and how I had done so.

Just as Craig Hull says: "Abstract photography is difficult to define." However, my own definition is that the abstract art actually can be the same as how the word abstract is used in a very different meaning and context: "An abstract is a brief summary [..] of a particular subject ..."

So, at best, an abstract painting, photograph or any work of art, gives a summary. Or that can be one way to see it. For example here the subject is the busy city lights seen at night. I used long exposure to stretch the lights. I used MirrorLab Android app effects to add a sphere, which in a way symbolizes photography to me. World is seen through lenses and mirrors. Photography can capture reality pretty accurately, but it can also distort it. And finally I saturated the image, to emphasize the colors of modern urban landscape seen at night.

So, in my mind, abstract art emphasizes and summarizes the essential; what is seen by the artist. It can be colors, ambiance, shapes and/or all of them. It tells what the artist saw, and what the scene is about.

So high tech! Really well composed. Abstract is an interesting thing to try and define, as is art. But I digress. I love that this comes from a city scene. There's layers of thought swirling around with all those lights.

As said to someone else before, there lives a small nerd inside of me, who loves all techie things... =D

What a busy city at night. I'd be frightened to cross the road, and I could be dragged into an underground vortex into a swirling panic zone.

Wow, my head starts whirring with your nighttime city! I can feel the crystal ball turning round and round...
I wonder whether darkening the dark midtones would add even more oomph

Thanks, Gudrun =)

Not sure how you would have done what you suggested, but here is a quick edit done on PicMonkey.

And if that is what you meant, it is an improvement =)

Yes, that's what I meant and it really is an improvement! Basically it's just touching the tone curve a bit:-)

Beautiful result.
Personally, I don't really see much difference between abstract and figurative, it's like two sides of a coin. It depends on someone's way of looking, f.i. simplifying the image to the essence, as f.i. Mondrian is a very good example.

I have started to think in the similar way. So, abstract is also many times a sort of an extraction. It gives a very narrow view on something.

For me it is more a feeling, my feeling looking at what the artist has done, but how can I know if my my feeling meets the artist's one?

No way to find out! Even if one communicates with the artist, it still is only "language game" =D

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_game_(philosophy)

I have probably mentioned this before. In 1980s I photographed bathroom details on low ISO film, and loved the details. But my mother only saw dirty tiles! =,D

And in case of a yellow abstract painting by one Finnish artist, my mother saw a mess of leftovers on a breakfast table and butter forgotten onto table, melting in the sunlight!

So, we all have our own learned ways to observe the world around us. Some may go close to what others see, but still all ways are unique.

And yet, I can be also wrong on all of this ;-)

J'ai lu ton commentaire à plusieurs reprises.

Well, I guess we can agree on one thing. There is no single clear definition for what is abstract =D

So, abstract art is rather abstract...

BUT, I think you succeeded well =)

That's quite an abstraction from reality indeed. And for certain in these times when busy city night life is officially put on hold.
