Early virtual reality

Early virtual reality
The "Holmes stereoscope" and a collection of "stereo cards" I inherited from my grand mother. The copyright notice on cards reveals the prints are done between years 1901 and 1907, but these devices became as a popular home entertainment medium already in 1850s. Unfortunately there are no information about the photographers and actual dates when the photographs have been taken.

Printed on stereo cards: H.C. White Co., The "Perfec" Stereograph.

Examples of stereo cards available at: content.lib.washington.edu/stereoweb

Post processing details: Nik Collection used for post processing. FIrst 'Fine Art' on Silver Efex Pro 2, and then 'Film Efex: Vintage' on Color Efex Pro 4.

What a clever way to photograph this stereoscope and its cards! I absolutely love what you did here, Sami! I also have a stereoscope with some cards, too, and it's a pretty remarkable device. :-))

Ah, the precursor to the Viewmaster! I have one of those but have never seen or heard of one of these. How cool that you have one. Interesting processing too. Great idea!

Reading the link proved to be so worthwhile, Sami. So cleverly thought out, and very original too. Lovely processing/

What a cool idea to make the stereoscope and the stereo cards into a stereo photo! I have never managed to see stereo, maybe a steroescope would do the trick;-) Excellent processing and that lace doily is a nice trouch:-)

I recommend trying with smaller pair of images:
www.ipernity.com/doc/serola/44395980/sizes/500

On the main image up here the distance between images seems to be wider then the distance between average distance of eyes, and then it simply will not work at all. One can't get the images overlap, no matter how hard you try.

With that smaller image, try to relax your eyes, like you are when looking something far away. You should then slowly start to see the images overlapping, and finally see sort of three pictures. The overlapping stereo image in the middle.

Good luck! =)

I've tried and tried and it still doesn't work for me:-( I remember on Panoramio there was quite a craze with 3D photos for a while and there I also never got the knack.

Unfortunately that indeed does not work for everyone. I don't know exactly why. One reason can be strabismus: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strabismus

I have it, a vertical one, and it indeed makes it difficult to view somewhat anything. Currently I have rather strong prism correction on my spectacles.

One of my eyes is considerably weaker than the other and on the better one I have astigmatism, I don't know if this has to do with it but I remember at sports in school I often missed the ball because I "saw" it in the wrong place.

Yes, that could be the reason. Not fun to have this sort of limitations =(

But better than being blind entirely! =D I'm personally happy not being a color blind, because I so enjoy especially color photography =)

I remember such old cards .... and your diptychon fits good to the game. But, it makes nervous and headache .... too much to see in the same time.
