It was about in here that we turned around and realized that we had climbed about 300ft above the lake, having missed a poorly-marked turn in the trail. I later realized that had we gone about another ten yards up the trail, we would have seen the upper lake just over the next rise.

I'm not sure, but this may be one of the very large loaves of rock one sees from the staircase section of the SW Massive trail.

Just past the elk carcass we came across the waterfall that one can hear from a mile across the valley. Regrettably, I got a little carried away with the shutter speed -- all the images of this waterfall ended up with excessively motion-blurred water like this (which doesn't look all that bad in a smaller image, actually).

We'd intended to do both Evans (left) and Bierstadt (right) on one hike, but when we saw what the Sawtooth (middle) looked like up close, we changed our plans.

With excellent timing, the big clouds only started to form in earnest as soon as we got back to the willow swamp on the way down.
