42 AVEBURY - Stone Circle

42 AVEBURY - Stone Circle
No, not on a mountain, standing at the base of one the stone in the Avebury Stone Circle shown below. It's huge!!
Avebury - Stone Circle stone and tree
Maybe one of "Tolkien's Talking Trees" or maybe the Avebury wishing tree. It certainly did have lots of roots showing. (Yes, I know I'm not showing those here.)

Gillian Everett, Gudrun, Boarischa Krautmo, Fred Fouarge and 16 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thanks - it was a powerful feeling standing there, so I wanted something where you could feel the strength of the stone.

Such a clever perspective.........I would have believed that to be a mountaintop!

I like the image in the PiP as well, to see the stone in context and in such a lovely landscape!

Thank you. It felt like a mountain - such strong energy.

And yes, I wanted one to try and see the perspective of how big it is - dont' know if it comes across completely, but someone standing at it would only come up about 1/10th of the height.

With this sort of subject, it's sometimes difficult to get a sense of of scale, but I think you've done a pretty good job here Laura.

If possible you could do a PiP with a person in it..........if you come across this situation again.

raingirl club has replied to Keith Burton club
Well, if you insist. *smile*
I've done the PiP. It's one from that trip - coming across it again? Probably a once in an lifetime experience for me. If/when I return to England I'll probably visit some of the many areas I've never been to instead of retracing my steps. It's a problem, because I wish I had the time and money to visit the best places over and over!
[Viewing the photo I must revise my prior statement to you, only about 3 times the height of a person - though the tree, it's almost 10 times the height of a person.]

Thanks for taking the trouble to do the PiP...........all becomes clear now!

Take care..........I hope that sometime you get the chance to come back to England to retrace your steps and make some new memories :-)

It’s a wonderful place, so much to see, so difficult to photograph because of its spread-out plan, I think. I like this transformation into mountain, appropriate because Avebury looks heavenwards in many ways.

raingirl club has replied to Steve Bucknell club
What a nice thing to say - you are right, Avebury has a lot of strength and is heavenly based in some sense.

I did find it very difficult to photograph. Maybe if I had had some different lenses to work with, but still I think it really is just meant to be experienced.

Thank you. Oh yes, many more stones, and back in 2015 I saw another stone circle up north. Very powerful.

We were heading to the Isle of Wight after visiting Castle Combe and so we had to stop at Avebury. We couldn't stop to go to Stonehenge (and wouldn't have been able to get very close anyway), but we wanted some stone circle to visit this trip. I was quite happy with this one!

Gudrun club has replied to raingirl club
I think yours was a wise choice! I visited Stonehenge twice, the first time you could still walk among the stones and it was fascinating. The second time was a disappointment.

Glad you got to go once when you could walk among them.

Have never visited Avebury, didn't realise the stone was so big.

raingirl club has replied to Gillian Everett club
This is the largest one at Avebury. Others are big also, but no contest to this one.
