The lighthouse scaffolding seems to have been primarily to allow the exterior to have its weatherproof coating renewed. It certainly seemed brighter afterwards. The light remained operational throughout.

The town centre decline is really the crux of the matter. The COOP supermarket downsized, moving to a former pub down by the marina. Peacocks followed fairly soon after that. Several smaller shops have succumbed as a result of lower footfall. The major shop in the centre is now Poundstretcher. There are bigger chain stores but they are in retail parks along the A259. So there is no heart to the town.

Taken in 2014 - not a lot has changed. It is substantial enough to protect the harbour entrance - apparently. The lighthouse maintenance crew drive their van along it, but the vertical surfaces on both sides are cracking up. www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/30060833/in/album/503055
