This is my preferred option for this piece of artwork because it looks better with the central black negative space against a black background.

I agree with you. I am very lazy with these doodles. I start off with one PSE effect, in this case a radial color gradient, and play about with it until something emerges which looks OK. Then I often go a step or two too far. The lighter version is a case in point, although I do like the colour mix. I only use 'color' when referring to PSE's terminology, as that is their way of spelling it.
