'These Walls Bear Witness' exhibition 1 - Portchester Castle - Prisoners of war depots map 2nd floor of the Keep -11 7 2019

The Keep was used as a prison in several different periods and held prisoners of many different nationalities. The current emphasis on the Afro-Caribbean soldiers of the French Napoleonic army, connects with a new study of their history during the wars and after their capture and eventual release. Their status as freed slaves and the French authorities' policies on the slave economy were significant elements in the story portrayed here.
