Seaford Head with a splitting headache - 10.3.2016

Seaford Head with a splitting headache - 10.3.2016
As a couple of my photos raised the subject of coastal erosion, here is an example of it about to happen. The cliffs don't just get eaten away at the bottom by the sea, the wind, rain and, as Ann below observes, ice can cause these cracks to appear.

There once was an experiment, in Victorian times I think, where they blew away part of the cliff to provide protection at its base, using the fallen rock. However as chalk is fairly soluble it was soon worn away. That's a bit more education!

It's surprising how long something like that can hang on. I am always anxious when I see people sitting right at the bottom of cliffs, on the beach somewhere like Birling Gap, a few miles east of here. There is no easy access to the shoreline under Seaford Head. The bit by the breakwaters has a barrier that can prevent access if the authorities suspect an imminent rock fall.
