Seaford Head defences - 27.4.2012


To the west of this point, i.e. above this picture, the coast is generally protected by structures like seawalls or breakwaters, or, as with Seaford and Bishopstone, by regularly restoring the shingle beach.
To the east of the defences seen here there is now no protection until one reaches Eastbourne. Houses at Birling Gap have been systematically demolished before the erosion gets to them. There are frequent rock falls from the chalk cliffs. Even in the seven years we have been here the Seaford Head profile has changed quite a lot.
