From the 'red route' markings you know that this is a busy road in the city centre. So why put your earphones on, preventing you from hearing what is coming up behind you and stopping your helmet from fitting comfortably and safely?! If you've paid good money for a leopard skin helmet - wear it!

It's a very good image and point that you make Phil. Must admit though that having recently took up cycling again having not done it since I was a kid I was reluctant to get a helmet. I mean nobody wore them back in the day as they say.

However, after some badgering from my sister-in-law who works in a high dependency unit who told me of the injuries non-helmet wearing cyclists have received and the after effects I changed my tune.

Wouldn't leave home without it now ... well not on the bike at least! ;)

I went over my handlebars and banged my head as I landed. Had I not been wearing a helmet I am not sure what the outcome would have been. It was a fairly slow-speed event, but even so an impact in the wrong place..... However that's no longer an issue for me as my cycling days are over, due to other ailments.
